SERDANG, 20 August 2026 – The Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products (INTROP), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), in collaboration with the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, organised the Mobility Programme: Biomass-Based 3D Printing Innovation for Sustainable Products with Ritsumeikan University, Japan on 20 August 2026 at the Arenga Seminar Room, INTROP. The programme involved 20 undergraduate students from Ritsumeikan University, Japan, from various fields of study.
The mobility programme aimed to introduce participants to manufacturing technology through the use of 3D printers, while highlighting biomass-based materials as a more sustainable alternative to conventional raw materials. The programme is aligned with INTROP’s role as one of UPM’s Higher Institution Centres of Excellence (HICoE), focusing on research in tropical forestry, forest products, biocomposites and derivative materials.

Through the programme, participants were introduced to the potential of biomass and 3D printing technology in producing prototypes, creative products and functional products. The use of materials such as natural fibres, biocomposites and biopolymers was also introduced as an innovative approach that supports the aspirations of Industry 4.0 and the circular economy. 3D printing technology is increasingly gaining importance in research, manufacturing and the creative industries due to its ability to accelerate prototype development, minimise material waste and support the development of more sustainable products. In the context of INTROP, the application of this technology creates opportunities to develop value-added products from various biomass resources and agricultural residues, including wood, bamboo, kenaf, oil palm and other lignocellulosic materials.
Throughout the programme, participants were exposed to the complete product development process using 3D printing technology, beginning with digital model design, preparation of printing files and material selection, through to the production process. They were also introduced to 3D printing software and hardware and participated in hands-on activities to strengthen their understanding and technical skills. As a key learning outcome, each participant had the opportunity to produce a 3D-printed keychain. This practical activity provided students with direct experience in applying the knowledge gained during the programme, while also showcasing INTROP’s facilities and expertise in prototype development and innovative biomass-based products.

The programme sessions were delivered by Associate Professor Dr Mohd Zulkhairi Mohd Yusoff, Ts. Dr Mohd Radzi Ali and Dr Thinesh Sharma A/L Balakrishnan, with the support of facilitators Dr Mohamed Abdillah Ahmad Farid, Dr Rasdianah Dahali, Dr Mohd Hafif Samsudin, Mr. Mohd Ashadie Kusno, Mr Lufti Mohd Tawil and Ms Ainnatul Mardhiah Idris. The programme covered topics including an introduction to biomass and its availability in the field, applications of 3D technology and opportunities in industry, an introduction to software and hardware, 3D printing design using software, and practical hands-on activities.
The organisation of this programme not only enhanced participants’ knowledge and skills but also served as an important platform for strengthening UPM’s internationalisation efforts through knowledge sharing, cultural exchange and direct learning experiences in a research laboratory environment. The programme also created opportunities for networking and potential future research and innovation collaborations between UPM and Ritsumeikan University.
From a sustainability perspective, the programme highlighted the use of biomass as a more environmentally friendly alternative material, with the potential to reduce dependence on petroleum-based materials while utilising available biomass resources. This approach also supports the development of value-added products and creates opportunities for the commercialisation of products and 3D printing services at INTROP.
Overall, the Mobility Programme: Biomass-Based 3D Printing Innovation for Sustainable Products reflects the commitment of INTROP and UPM to integrating technology, innovation, sustainability and international education. Exposure to additive manufacturing technology and biomass-based materials is expected to nurture a generation of students who are more creative, technically skilled and aware of sustainable product development, while further strengthening INTROP’s position as a reference centre for biomass-based research and innovation.
