The visit to IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia

Bogor, Indonesia, 10 January 2024 - The visit to IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia was successfully conducted on 10–11 January 2024. This visit was represented by 5 officer and staff from the Laboratory of Sustainable Bioresource Management (BIOREM), Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products (INTROP) and lead by Prof. Dr. Zaiton Samdin. The purpose of this visit was to establish a strategic cooperation relationship between BIOREM Laboratory researchers specialising in the management of bamboo and Eucalyptus plantations. Specifically, the aim was to collaborate on the development of tissue culture technique modules, automated greenhouse monitoring systems, and best planting techniques. Additionally, it provides opportunities to gain knowledge and carry out collaboration with international research institutes in the field of forestry.

The discussion, chaired by Dr. rer. agr. Eva Anggraini, as Director of Global Connectivity, was held between the two parties, including professors and investigators from the Faculty of Forestry and Environment, IPB University. The discussions are regarding the involvement and collaboration between IPB University and INTROP on seminars, publications, and collaboration networks in the future. On this occasion, INTROP also promotes the postgraduate programme, potential inbound and outbound programmes, and mobility offered at INTROP. The two-day visit included several activities, such as a visit to the Tissue Culture Laboratory, the bamboo planting area, the Indonesian Bambu Foundation, and the Gunung Walat University Forest.

These visits enhanced our knowledge and techniques in producing bamboo products as implemented by Yayasan Bambu Indonesia in Bogor. This foundation is responsible for educating residents to create products from bamboo, and every year more than 500 residents succeed in becoming bamboo entrepreneurs. In addition, an activity at Gunung Walat University Forest, Bogor, under the Faculty of Forestry and Environment, IPB University was also held, including exploring forest trails and discussion about bamboo and Eucalyptus with Mr. Meidilaga, the field manager at Gunung Walat Education Forest.

It is hoped that this visit will help to enhance the potential of UPM officials and staff seeking skills development in the field of forestry and increase the knowledge of laboratory staff while allowing them to competently conduct their duties. Furthermore, it is expected that this engagement will further highlight INTROP's visibility in the Asian and international regions.
