Batu Berendam, Melaka, February 7, 2024 - A successful visit to DK Composites Sdn. Bhd, Melaka was conducted involving the participation of 3 officers from the BioComposite Technology Laboratory (BIOCOMPOSITE), Tropical Forestry and Forest Products Institute (INTROP), led by the Director, Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Khalina Abdan. The INTROP officers accompanying were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Edi Syams and Ts. Dr. Mohd Saiful Asmal. The purpose of this visit is to establish a strategic collaboration between INTROP and DK Composites regarding the field of natural fiber-based insulation panel production in the construction industry specifically. Furthermore, it provides opportunities for knowledge enhancement and collaboration networking with the industry in the field of biocomposites.

The half-day visit was filled with discussion activities and a tour of the fiberglass product manufacturing factory. The discussion session chaired by Ms. Maziah Mohamad, CEO of DK Composites, was held between the two parties. Among the discussion highlights were the involvement of collaboration between DK Composites and INTROP in seminars, publications, and future cooperation networks. DK Composites Sdn. Bhd. is a renowned composite manufacturer company known for its architectural, marine, and rail products and components, has expressed several key challenges in their production process, including:

  1. Challenges of Using Plywood/Wood Boards: The use of plywood/wood boards as molds and coverings requires strength and a good surface. However, problems arise when resin and hardener are applied, leading to waste that results in delamination.
  2. Construction and Installation of Domes Challenge: For domes with a diameter greater than 23 meters, steel structures are required. The company aims to reduce costs by eliminating the need for steel structures for larger diameters. However, thorough analysis is needed to determine the dome structure's ability to withstand without the support of steel structures.
  3. Study on the Use of Banana Fibers: DK Composites Sdn Bhd is conducting research on the use of banana fibers as fillers for their modular house wall panels, in an effort to enhance environmental sustainability and explore more eco-friendly alternatives.

DK Composites and INTROP are taking proactive steps to address these challenges by conducting research and testing various methods and materials with potential for commercialization. They are also confident that continuous collaboration initiatives with INTROP will effectively overcome all these challenges.
