Serdang, July 19, 2023 - The Weaving Training Workshop for the “commercialisation of kenaf textile as raw material in boat manufacturing industry” project organized by the Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products (INTROP) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), was successfully conducted on July 17 and 18, 2023. The workshop, attended by industry professionals, local weavers, sponsors, and UPM students, aimed to develop kenaf textile weaving technology through the integration of skilled labor expertise for the production of kenaf textile products in composite boat applications.

Over the course of the two-day workshop, activities such as the installation of weaving machines and practical weaving sessions were conducted. The participants, consisting of UPM students from various backgrounds, actively engaged in the workshop, contributing to the enhancement of their own craftsmanship skills. The success of the workshop was made possible by the presence of two experienced local weavers, Puan Noraini and Puan Siti Meriam, who have more than 10 years of weaving experience. The workshop was also attended by project sponsors, Puan Wan Azlin and Puan Wan Aishah, from the National Kenaf and Tobacco Board. Dr. Noor Intan, representing a local company, also participated in the weaving workshop to share ideas and insights on kenaf textiles.

Prof. Ts. Dr. Khalina Abdan, Project Leader, stated that the workshop aimed to develop and establish the kenaf textile industry, integrate skilled labor expertise, collaborate with downstream industry players, and produce kenaf textile products. It is hoped that the Kenaf Textile Weaving Training Workshop will effectively apply expertise and skilled labor, ultimately benefiting the industry.
