Webinar: Blue Carbon and its Trading Potential

The Strategic Blue Carbon Unit, INTROP with collaboration from New Sarawak Tribune held a seminar entitled ‘Webinar on Blue Carbon and its Trading Potential’ on 15th September 2023 through the Zoom meeting application.

Blue carbon (mangrove and seagrass) ecosystem is considered a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation. Due to its capacity to store and sequestrate more carbon than other terrestrial ecosystems, it is gaining importance in research and business communities. As collective efforts to mitigate climate change  continue, carbon market and trading mechanisms are becoming increasingly prominent in the global economy. This webinar was held to raise awareness on blue carbon and how it can be traded in the market.

Two speakers, experts on the subject matter, namely Southridge Malaysia Sdn Bhd director and Enggang (Pekan) Sdn Bhd CEO Dr Jane Koh, and Dr. Waseem Razzaq Khan, Research Associate at INTROP shared their valuable understanding on the topic with participants. Dr. Jane Koh, a sustainability scientist who obtained her PhD on political ecology of forestry carbon credit at UPM, highlighted the essential roles of carbon credit projects in addressing climate actions. Dr Waseem Razzaq Khan explained  the importance of blue carbon ecosystems (mangroves  and  seagrass) in Malaysia which show  high sequestration rates of carbon dioxide.

The webinar was attended by 155 participants from a diverse group of stakeholders from the government, private sector, NGOs, and universities from five countries (Indonesia, Philippines, Laos, Pakistan and Malaysia) interested to learn more about the potential of blue carbon, carbon market and trading in Malaysia. Foreigners accounted for about 50% participation. As Malaysia is gearing towards actively participating in the carbon market and trading, INTROP will be organising more similar seminars to educate and raise awareness on this subject matter.
