BASIC COURSE INTRODUCING PLANT TISSUE CULTURE 2025

SERDANG – The Plant Tissue Culture Training was successfully conducted over two days, from 14 to 15 May 2025. This training is one of the initiatives under the Laboratory of Sustainable Bioresource Management (BIOREM). It was designed to fulfil the requirements of the Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products (INTROP), Universiti Putra Malaysia, as a Phase II Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) in the field of tropical wood and fibre materials, as designated by the Department of Higher Education (JPT).

Plant tissue culture is a method of producing in-vitro plant material identical to its mother plant and has uniform growth. The uniformity of growth is one of the important things in assisting the management of crop production to ensure the uniform growth of seedlings.

The purpose of this training is to provide practical training in basic plant tissue culture techniques to the community, particularly agricultural entrepreneurs, government and private agencies, public and private universities, as well as individuals interested in exploring the field of biotechnology. Additionally, it also provides a platform to strengthen university-community engagement and support those involved in the agricultural industry while enhancing collaboration networks between the community and industry.

The advantage of this training was the practical exposure participants received, including the formulation of plant sterilization techniques and acclimatization processes—both critical in vitro plant propagation. Participants were trained to perform subculturing, culture media preparation, and plant transfer from culture flasks to polybags. To complete the training, participants also attended lectures on plant tissue culture.

In line with the university’s aspiration to support and advance the agricultural industry and in response to encouraging public interest, this training is planned to be conducted on an annual basis.
