SERDANG, 15 July 2026 – The beauty of Japanese horticultural art, which blends creativity, aesthetics, and sustainability, took centre stage during the Kokedama Workshop organised by the Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products (INTROP), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The workshop was held as part of PRO-LAB 2026, an initiative designed to strengthen technical competencies while promoting knowledge transfer through hands-on learning.

Held at Preparation Laboratory 2, Sustainable Bioresource Management Laboratory (BIOREM), INTROP, the workshop brought together participants from diverse backgrounds to learn the art of Kokedama, a traditional Japanese horticultural technique that cultivates plants in moss-covered soil balls instead of conventional pots. Beyond its distinctive aesthetic appeal, Kokedama promotes sustainable gardening practices and offers an environmentally friendly alternative for displaying ornamental plants.

The workshop  included a theoretical session that explained the  history and philosophy of Kokedama, its fundamental principles, suitable plant selection, growing media formulation, and essential care and maintenance practices. The practical and demonstration sessions guided participants through each stage of the Kokedama-making process, from shaping the soil ball and wrapping it with moss to applying the finishing touches. 

Through this hands-on learning approach, participants gained not only theoretical knowledge but also practical experience. The interactive workshop encouraged participants to exchange ideas, share experiences, and build confidence in applying horticultural techniques in a creative and meaningful way. The Kokedama Workshop reflects INTROP's ongoing commitment to developing competency-based programmes that integrate research, innovation, and knowledge transfer.
