PROGRAMME 2

(2) BIOCOMPOSITE MANUFACTURING AND PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY
      Head of programme: TBD

DESCRIPTION:

This programme covers fabrication of biocomposite products from lignocellulosic materials through state-of-the-art technologies and equipment. The fabrication of biocomposite is very significant especially in the furniture, construction, building and automotive industries. It is capable of producing materials and products that are sustainable, eco-friendly, lightweight and at low fuel consumption as well as cutting CO2 emissions. Moreover, both defense and aerospace industries have also utilized the biocomposite materials to replace composites made from high cost, high density, and non-biodegradable synthetic fibres such as glass, carbon and aramid. Biocomposites could be fabricated via injection moulding, vacuum bagging, compression moulding, resin transfer moulding, pultrusion, filament winding, vacuum infusion moulding, hand lay-up, solution casting, extrusion, centrifugal casting and out of autoclave (OOA) process.

Skop Penyelidikan / Research Scopes:

  1. Biomimetic biocomposites,
  2. Recycling of biocomposites,
  3. Biobased polymer composite packaging,
  4. Bionanokomposit / bionanocomposites, dan
  5. Fabrication processes such as pultrusion, injection moulding, extrusion, compression moulding etc.

Stakeholders:

Government agencies, local communities, industries players (i.e wood-based, defence, aerospace, automotive, furniture, and building and construction industries and related manufacturers).

PROGRAMME 3

(3) ADVANCED HYBRID BIOCOMPOSITE TECHNOLOGYADVANCED HYBRID BIOCOMPOSITE TECHNOLOGY
Head of programme: Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohamed Thariq bin Haji Hameed Sultan

DESCRIPTION:

This programme develops advanced and high performance biocomposite products using hybrid materials (micro to nanoscale fibres, single fibre, yarn and woven or non-woven textile) from natural or hybrid with synthetic materials and metals. This programme focusses on the hybridization of natural fibres with synthetic fibres such as glass, carbon, aramid, Kevlar, rayon, nylon, mineral-based fibres, and woven textile mat or fabric through different hybridization techniques reinforcing polymer matrices to produce advanced and high-performance hybrid biocomposites. It also includes fibre metal laminate (FML) where several thin metal layers are bonded with layers of biocomposites. Advanced hybrid biocomposites have extraordinary properties such as mechanical, physical, and thermal properties without compromising environmentally friendly aspects such as biodegradability, non-toxicity and environmental sustainability. This programme supports the research to produce products using sustainable, smart and new materials. The products cover advanced and cutting-edge applications for aviation, construction, medical, defence, marine and transportation industries.
